Yes, as a Canadian citizen you do need an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) before you fly. It’s not required for all nationalities but Canada is one of the countries that needs one, along with the UK, US, and many others.
The NZeTA is quick to apply for and is usually approved within minutes to a few hours. You apply through the official NZ Immigration app or website before your trip, and it’s linked electronically to your passport so there’s nothing to print. It’s valid for 2 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first, and allows multiple trips to New Zealand within that period.
