Can I extend my India e-tourist visa from within the country?

Travelling in India right now on a 30-day e-tourist visa, but I’d love to stay longer. Is there any way to extend without leaving, or am I going to have to exit and reapply from scratch?

Unfortunately India e-tourist visas cannot be extended from within the country. The e-visa is a fixed-term entry and there’s no in-country extension process available for it.

Your options are to either leave India before your visa expires and reapply for a fresh e-visa from abroad, or if you’re set on staying longer without leaving, you could visit a local Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) to enquire about a visa conversion, though this is a more complex route and not always straightforward for tourists.

The most practical option for most people is to do a short border run to a neighbouring country like Nepal or Sri Lanka, then reapply for a new e-visa. Just make sure you’re aware of the e-visa limit: India generally allows a maximum of 2 e-tourist visas per calendar year. More info on the FRRO here: https://indianfrro.gov.in
